This graph is amazing. It shows that measuring #SARSCoV2 levels in municipal sewage almost perfectly predicts forthcoming #COVID19 cases with a full week's notice (R=0.994). It's one of several discoveries in this new study from @Yale: https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.05.19.20105999v1.full.pdf …. C-19 is #InThePooppic.twitter.com/shNzTKYoYP

Copying study authors @SaadOmer3 @jordan_peccia @NathanGrubaugh @WeinbergerDan. Data appear to be in pre-print. Look forward to full peer-reviewed study. Definitely something of interest to my journal, #AmJGastro. Many target journals would be interested in this work.

It could at least provide an early warning that "re-opening" is not going as hoped.

I’d rather have to get 1 sample from the sewer than what, 2000 swabs from individual people? (Not as good, I know, but a whole lot quicker)

What are the top 1 or 2 things you could do with that data? The 1 week discovery - do tighter tracing measures? Like real things (preventative) not hospital capacity (since that won’t likely be an issue). Curious if you have thoughts...

Start sampling the incoming sewer lines to narrow down what neighborhoods the clusters are in, and test everyone there. (Original idea from someone on Twitter months ago.)

For one thing, if true this means that if @OCSewers monitored Covid19 levels, hospitals like @chocchildrens @UCIrvineHealth and @KPSCALnews could resume elective procedures, as long as a preponderance of patients would be expected to be home one week after the surgery.

@EpiEllie If Covid19 levels in the sewers spiked, elective procedures could be called off, current convalescents sent home or transferred, before the need for ICU units materialized, no?
