Sadly, we've known for decades that a subset of people have authoritarian tendencies and that hatred toward outgroups is often widespread
At this point, I'm less outraged/surprised by the extent of Trump's public support than the passivity and acquiescence of so many elites

People's vulnerability to Trump-like figure hasn't changed. What changed is that the institutions of Am. govt./party system legitimized one

That's why I'm dubious about all the root cause psychologizing - where's data showing economic anxiety or racial hatred is that much higher?

Trump's rise represents a failure in American parties, media, and civic institutions - and they're continuing to fail right now

Shockingly few public figures and elites are defending the norms of public debate and restraint from violence that Trump is bulldozing.

These norms are fragile precisely because, per
@emilythorson, they are not formal or legal. And they are hard to restore once breached.139 retweets 216 likes - View other replies

No one person or institution is at fault for Trump. Everyone has their favorite monocausal explanation. They're all incomplete.

We can sort through root causes later. Here's where we are: Someone could capture a major party nom who endorses violence & few seem alarmed

@BrendanNyhan I went to high school with these ‘elites’. Cold-blooded WASPs still resentful of hard-working Papists & striving Hebrews.1 retweet 11 likes -
@AlbertsonB2@BrendanNyhan members of Congress not having a backbone is unfortunately completely unsurprising to me now0 retweets 4 likes -
@AlbertsonB2@BrendanNyhan single-minded seekers of re-election explains most of it to me. They don't want to get primaried so stay neutral0 retweets 3 likes -
@BrendanNyhan what makes you think elites despise authoritarianism? Elites afraid of democracy (e.g. superdelegates)0 retweets 6 likes -
@BrendanNyhan@Chris Hayes said this was happening in one form or another. Can't trust institutions, here comes a demagogue.2 retweets 4 likes -

@BrendanNyhan - I'll pay you $1000 to go to a#BlackLivesMatter protest and yell "All lives matter!" The authoritarians are on both sides.0 retweets 4 likes - View other replies

@MathChecker@BrendanNyhan that's not anti-authoritarianism, that's purposeful use of flippant racism and proves nothing0 retweets 0 likes -
@isaaclubow@BrendanNyhan - You seem to believe that some races are intolerant of all races. "All lives matter" is not a racist statement.0 retweets 0 likes -
@MathChecker@BrendanNyhan not inherently, no. But when it's presumed all lives matter, but one race is treated as though theirs do not,0 retweets 0 likes -
@MathChecker@BrendanNyhan it's a flippant attempt at obfuscating a very real issue.0 retweets 0 likes -
@MathChecker@BrendanNyhan A lot like if a house caught fire and you said "all houses matter" as... An excuse not to extinguish or pay attn.0 retweets 2 likes -
@isaaclubow isaaclubow@BrendanNyhan - I PRESUME - very much so - that all lives matter.0 retweets 0 likes -
@MathChecker@BrendanNyhan great. but why scream that at the families of slain teenagers?0 retweets 0 likes - Show more
