Debunking is found to be more effective than prebunking in two recent papers on the timing of efforts to counter misinformation https://www.pnas.org/content/118/5/e2020043118 … https://psyarxiv.com/48zqn/ pic.twitter.com/eCEFQISftj

Would be interesting to test prebunking in group settings If you have 10 people and 2 argue something while 1 was prebunked against it can they limit the other 7 from buying in

Isn't part of the value of prebunking for those orgs and people who need to have a response ready though? Prebunking perhaps makes debunking easier.

sure, you can get ready in advance either way. question on these papers is which timing is optimal to show people

These studies (maybe I read them wrong?) appear to have done everything in a single engagement with the subject. I don't know how useful those results are. I'd be more interested in seeing if inoculation two or three weeks ahead of time has an impact.

I also think the content of the message matters. One of the more effective efforts to prebunk anti-union messages, for example, is giving employees union-myth bingo cards before they go in to captive audience meetings. The added humor/absurdity element to the prebunking helps.

Is there anything in the literature about the pace of debunking? Is there value in debunking quickly? Or is the only value in rapid fact-checking/debunking preventing more exposure?

And, do we know anything about the relationship between making a judgment about the veracity of a static headline & people's ability to make correct judgments on live material from the Web?

Would be interesting to know how certain social media trends impact prebunking vs debunking. It is often seems to be the case that misinfo gets far more amplification than the debunk does. In either case, both prebunking and debunking together as a truth sandwich may be ideal.

I'd have guessed that "prebunking" simply primes the brain to be receptive of a concept it recognizes from earlier exposure, lowering the bar to acceptance, while debunking is a critical engagement that trains the brain in the skill of considering information and its sources.

Debunking after unfortunately seems like a much heavier lift on the product front.

@vaxteen this recent research on pre- vs de-bunking is relevant to your work fighting vaccine misinformation. (so glad you are working on this!)
