There was no justification for Eric Garner being placed in a chokehold and choked to death after saying "I can't breathe." This is modern lynching.
Lynchings serve a specific sociopolitical function within white supremacy. Public is repeatedly shown images of Black people being murdered by police, followed by a legal process that legitimates the racism & violence. How is this different from 19th & 20th century lynchings?
You can't separate these events from the larger context surrounding them anymore than you can separate lynchings from Jim Crow. It matters that the Eric Garner case unfolded as it did at the same time white nationalists became emboldened & there was growing racist backlash in USA

It cannot be overstated that Garner was even approached in the first place thanks to over policing/ nuisance laws designed to replace/ rename Jim Crow.
