Nothing similar existed at the end of the First Cold War. It is thus a huge indictment of disastrous policies pursued after 1989.

When reading the statements made these days by numerous American and Russian officials one feels an almost palpable relief among them that they finally able to openly display frustration and hatred that has accumulated over the past 30 years.

Haven't yet finished this but would recommend it on the topic or early post cold war NATO expansion. It paints a much more complicated diplomatic picture than some current narratives

Very moving piece by a young Ukrainian mathematician in Moscow who killed himself after he was prevented from going back to Ukraine. This may be weird, I'm not sure, but it did more to make me feel the horror of this war than pictures of destroyed cities.

Fascinating thread. Best paired with a revisit of the mainstream American coverage of the Russian economy during this period, which was triumphal. No wonder and hated those NYT corespondents in Moscow so much…

New study by postdoc and colleagues. Paper assesses gaps between income estimates used in inequality studies and macroeconomic statistics, in 10 Latin American countries. Measurement gaps are due mainly to non-covered capital income. Read on!

Remembering too much is not good--because you clearly see human stupidity. I recall how The Economist lamented that few Soviet leaders come from St Petersburg, the Westernized hub of Russia. Eventually, one came.

I recall how Obama would intentionally have much longer meetings with Medvedev, then president and the alleged liberal, and try to diss off Putin, then the Prime Minister, by meeting very briefly w/ him.

The Obama administration used to play off Medvedev, "the liberal", against Putin. But since the war, whether b/c he believes in it or b/c he thinks it is good for him, Medvedev's statements (inc. today's about bringing back capital punishment) are blood-curling.

Long thread. Let's go over what may be at the origin of the current crisis: the economic depression of the early 1990s in Russia (and Ukraine). All graphs and data are from my 1998 book which is freely downloadable here:

Un hilo imperdible sobre las consecuencias sociales y económicas de la caída de los socialismos reales y la transicion al capitalismo salvaje entre 1987 y 1998. Los origenes de la Rusia contemporánea se ubican, precisamente, en la enorme depresion económica de los '90.

This is insane. Is this right? I haven't seen the data presented like this before. No substantial change in death rate over 2 years, just a remarkably steady climb: the socially acceptable rate of carnage.
