It’s a movie about struggling with faith, belief, and the way little “signs” often reveal themselves to feel as though they are part of a bigger design. He just used aliens who are water allergic as a metaphor to get there.

And tbh, it’s impressive. He took an idea that in any other hands would have train wrecked. Doesn’t work for people who can’t get past the logic issues, but I think it’s a pretty masterfully crafted film. It’s also pretty self-aware, and funnier than people give it credit for.

I think most people miss that the movie, much as you stated, is also a class in the acceptance of mystery through universally synchronized events. That there may be a "plan" and that solutions to problems may exist before the problems are presented.

All those dead aliens didn't get the universe's message? Poor buggers.

They absolutely did get the message which is why they came to Earth and succeeded in giving meaning to the mother's death.

So the mother's death is responsible for the brutal and literal hosing of the aliens? Honestly, I'm starting to think the aliens were the good guys in this movie...
