Based on my experience on a speaker selection committee, I wrote a post about gender bias in choosing speakers: http://www.brains-explained.com/seminar-speaker-selection-a-case-study-of-gender-bias-in-science/ … Main takeaways: - men submitted 71% of the speaker nominations - 73% of nominees were men - women were twice as likely to nominate womenpic.twitter.com/G3TyvwxjZs

I made a (top secret 😉) spreadsheet of people I think would be cool to invite as speakers, then calculated the gender balance and made sure I had 50/50. It's a long list, but I do hope to balance my invites over time.

Nice. I really don't think it's that hard if people just put a small amount of thought into it!

Exactly. I definitely did think of more men's names at first, but it only took a few minutes to check myself and correct course.

Wow! Thanks for the analysis! Your data on female students sounds familiar. It took me until I was a senior postdoc to believe I was remotely qualified enough to nominate a speaker. But I’m so glad I did. My nomination was chosen and I had a great dinner with @stevens1lab
