Haven’t seen many people talking about corner details on the iPhone X that are kind of cool, so Tall West did a quick Medium post:

If you work somewhere that sends marketing push notes, but also has necessary ones, please provide in-app settings to control what the user wants to get, and provide people an easy way in with providesAppNotificationSettings. That enables a “configure in...” deep link.

I used to just make UI for whatever like let’s draw some GRADIENTS, but now I’m all like what’s the user problem and is there a long term vision ugh

It’s the end of an era. The hamburger button on Google Maps for iOS is no more. It’s corpse will exist for a limited time to inform people where functionality has moved. Tabs have won.

A cool solution is to hold off on animating many of those properties until tap release. In normal swipe use, you can't tell the difference. But if you choose to drag the panel a bit before letting go, it doesn't look weird, and it gives it a feeling of stability that feels nice.

If you animate it in direct relation to the drag, the dragger will be looking at a poopy state for much of their interaction. Buttons half on the screen, weird backgrounds fading in, and every flaw in the work.

    • Album art changes size • Text switches from white to black • Buttons fade out / fade in • Position of label and font weight change • Tab bar slides in from off the bottom of the screen • Background fades to white • Bg view's tinted labels go from gray to red • Etc, etc

Tough transit tip: Instead of animating your transition in direct relation to the drag, consider moving pieces as part of the snap animation. Here's an example you can check out in Apple Music. We have to get from State A to State B...

Bonus post! Here’s a WIP variation that didn’t stick. Had fun making it reflect in the glass. Didn’t finish polishing before going back to the other idea.

So fun to get to do! Thanks again to for the opportunity to make another Mac icon.

Lastly, I work at the largest size, then scale down. But a lot of details will get lost on the smaller sizes. For that, I'll go through and do minor tweaks for each size to make sure it feels right.

Another thing I like to do is put some color in it. Each light had its own color temperature, the metal is slightly blue, and the glass is green. Here's the color pulled out and pegged to get an idea.

Then to the actual object! The hardest thing with glass icons is that they have to be transparent, so no blending modes and it has to work on all backgrounds. I do that by alternating between backgrounds every few minutes as I work.

Next came Photoshop to draw the actual glass and metal. It had been a while since I had drawn those elements, so I started with some freeform shapes so I could remember how to do it.

I used Illustrator to lay the shapes out and try a bunch of different scales and orientations.

The client, had a rough idea of what he wanted, which essentially boils down to a recreation of the UI in icon form. Apps like Calculator, Contacts, and Maps do this. Here was my initial sketch:
