I always thought that home grown would be more carbon neutral! Interesting, could you explain why not?

Yes! Firstly, it’s complex. BUT food miles are a really poor proxy for carbon emissions for a number of reasons. Largely because transport contributes ~6% of its carbon footprint, other factors are usually far more impt. There are many others too!

We live on 2/3s of an acre of land and have a really nice veggie plot and greenhouse. We grow our own but we still need to supplement from the supermarket. It would be a full time job growing and storing enough fruit and veg to feed two people through the entire year.

These community allotments are a lovely idea as a project to bring people together, but the reality is they're only suitable for a couple of meals per person involved and a sense of satisfaction in eating something you grew.

It's not for everyone, but a lot of people are scared to give it a go because they think they don't have the time, skill or money. Small scale, windowsill salads & hanging basket tomatoes is a good starting point, inexpensive & fun.
-
But not very productive. You might be able to grow a week's worth of salad a year.

Do you honestly think 8 million people in, say, London have enough space to grow any meaningful amount of food?

I've got an allotment and I love it but it's bloody hard work, especially when you work full time. We grow a lot but nowhere near enough to be self-sufficient. Plus there just isn't the option for most people in urban areas who don't have gardens/access to community plots
