Not everyone would die of starvation. A lot of people do eat 100% local. Many give up the diversity of food available from far away. Can all humans do this, no. Urban areas are food unsustainable. Correct statement is ‘it depends.’

‘Not everyone would die of starvation’ and ‘We would die of starvation’ are of course the same statement, unless you don’t count the deaths of others in your community.

In my community could we? All? Yes. In NYC, could they? No. Spin away, I’m just saying this is not a black and white thing. It does depend.

So you’re saying you personally wouldn’t die of starvation, so you’re good with it if others do. Cool, cool.

It would be interesting to know the minimum amount of land needed to support 1 person.

James, what Shannon is saying is correct....and the idea that she or anyone is discounting the deaths of others in the community is not correct. The fact is that we have gotten very far away from eating only local. Fortunately, we are reversing that trend....

and she is one of the ones leading that charge. She has been supplying local food as well as coordinating with other farms to rebuild local food systems here in Western MA. It will take time for this to be more common, but it certainly is happening.
