Blimey - this is true (and utterly obvious when you think about it). But like and many others, I had no idea. Thanks, Twitter!

Does anyone know what this is? Looks like petal identity is being ectopically activated in patches of leaves. Found it growing at Stanford Mall.

There's nothing "level-headed" about concluding that "both sides" have faults. Lambasting select plant foods while omitting that many animal production systems perpetuate the same enviro and human rights abuses is either ignorance or an intentional maneuver to drum up animosity

‘Eat local’ is common advice for a low-carbon diet. But this has little impact on your carbon footprint. Transport accounts for only 6% of food emissions. Focus instead on *what* you eat. Food choices > food miles. Latest article:

By far the biggest greenhouse impact of meat production, conveniently ignored by almost everyone, is the Carbon Opportunity Cost: not using the land for another purpose (such as rewilding). It's massive, vastly outweighing food miles and other impacts:

Hey, , I made a plant cell! Ok, to be fair there is some “artistic license” going on in my version. To take slices I use something more like a guillotine than a microtome, they come out much straighter than when I “hand-section”.

[Trivia] Initially, the gene driving stomata differentiation, MUTE, was to be named “CHEDDAR”. Why? B/c unlike SWISS🧀, there’s no holes in CHEDDAR🧀🙃🙂. We could have had textbooks saying “SPEECHLESS and CHEDDAR regulate stomata development...” 🧀🇨🇭

Ramadan this year falls between April 23 and May 23, which means it may very well coincide with your final exam. Now that you know the dates, how do you plan to help your students who may be fasting? I will offer an alternative time to students so that they can eat before.

Our paper on nanopore direct RNA sequencing is now published in eLife! DRS captures info on 5' end, splicing, RNA mods, poly(A) site choice, and poly(A) tail length, and does not suffer from biases caused by RT. We think its pretty cool!

Yes, doubling in number of PhDs awarded since I got mine, longer time in postdoc period, and far more students on temporary visas. I grant it was no picnic in our day, but it's without question harder now. (Image source )
