Of course, my own commentary is now subject to the same line of criticism. I work at Harvard and leverage the networks and resources to bring attention to the aspects of “disinformation” that I prioritize. But I am also subject to the “suggestions” of those more powerful than me.

And, while I try to surround myself with people who are “doing good work,” I can’t help but see political and social formations warp around the expediency with which one can influence the social with a well placed oped charging so and so with “weaponization of disinformation.”

How did we get here? Knowledge is expensive to make, reproduce, & distribute. It requires immense labor and planning. Think of the library and the chain of production that underlie the materials, books, shelves, computers; the work of organization w/ a theory of curation. Staff!

Great thread. One thing I worry about in the disinfo discourse is when ppl argue that we should centralize more power to elite voices/platforms/sources of knowledge “to stop disinfo.” Speaks to an inherent distrust of public knowledge and lack of faith in democratic discourse.

I want more citizen scientists. I want more skeptics and critical thinkers. I desperately hope for more local journalists. There is always the danger looming in the background that even a democratic govt could use the spectre of disinfo as a weapon to silence perspectives.

Thanks for this important thread. It is indeed ironic that we, among other things, highlight the problems associated with lack of a sense of history & attention deficits on Twitter. Every word adds to clutter. Important to maintain a sense of humor & to embrace humility.

The reduction to systems began long age but I think we can look at the debates then about ways to embrace complexity, to let the data speak for itself, and begin to unravel decades of reductive empiricism.
