Hi Globe. Fentanyl/opioids do *not cause clinical effects by touching, though many cops have been wrongly told it‘s possible. Also nausea + tingling are not symptoms of opioid exposure. My @harvardmed colleague Ed Boyer & I wrote about this in the @nytimeshttps://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/23/opinion/opioid-fentanyl-hysteria-massachusetts.html …

I've heard local stories (legends?) of this as well - police getting hospitalized after searching a stolen vehicle, etc. So, there's no risk of exposure by physical contact?

Love it Ryan! Thank you. May I ask your permission to distribute this at my ED, local responders?

Why are you printing such blatant misinformation? Opioids do not go through the skin, if they did, people wouldn’t need to inject/swallow them. Those are not symptoms of opioid exposure. Be a source of correct information, be a true resource for your community.
-
(psst - Fentanyl comes in patch form. Don't speak in absolutes - general public doesn't get it)
-
With a little extra tinkering of it to make it pass through the skin barrier. Not what they are talking about.
-
I’ve taken care of some idiots that decided chewing on those might be a good idea though.

If only there were some experts out there to provide some technical guidance for these stories. And for the responders.
