It can’t even pay for a one bed in the northeast.

Obviously, I wouldn’t expect a 2 bedroom apartment if I can’t work hard enough to get past minimum wage

So, do well in whatever school you attend, don't father or have a child out of wedlock, don't abuse alcohol or take drugs and show up early and stay late. You will earn well in excess of the minimum wage in no time, particularly in the Trump economy. It ain't that hard.

It seems like a two-bedroom apartment should only be needed if there are two incomes, so double all your income numbers. A single person, making minimum wage, shouldn't be expected to be on their own with an extra bedroom. That calls for a roommate.
-
What if they have a kid? Should their kid sleep in their bed?
-
Who is they? The parents? Which would be two incomes...
-
What if they're a single parent?
-
Well there *has* to be two parents. If you're saying one is a deadbeat, then that's addressed in both the legal and welfare systems already. Minimum wage should cover typical situations. We shouldn't expect it to cover every possible social situation.
-
Almost a third of children in America live with a single parent or away from both parents. Of that third, the majority - nearly a quarter of the population - live with a single mother. The other parent might be dead, or unknown, or unable or unwilling to contribute.
-
Welfare is increasingly hard to access and even harder to live on. And you can call a quarter or a third "atypical", but every case going unaddressed means people going without food or shelter, so, yes, I think we should do everything we can not to leave anyone out.
-
Then we should correct that problem in the welfare and legal systems. We shouldn't ignore that issue & instead try to subsidize it through minimum wage, which in typical situations would create an excess.
