What baffles me is how does that happen in space? There's no atmosphere to propel and yet the capsules move, with firing. Could somebody give me a simple explanation?

Rockets work with fuel+oxidizer. So they don't just pack fuel but the oxigen to burn it too. Then these are mixed in the engine bell, and then ignited. The bell ensures that the expansion can only happen in on direction, thus the capsule is pushed the other way.
