In general, so much makes sense now about how Whedon created a far more toxic and patriarchal vampire boyfriend than Edward ever was, in Angel, and people were still doing that "Buffy vs. Edward" bullsh*t

Like, not defending Twilight here, but Buffy is *definitely worse* when it comes to specifically romantic dynamics between vampires and the female lead. Angel isn't just someone who wants to eat women he's attracted to, he is deep down a sadist who wants to torture

The whole idea of Angel is that Men (the man writing him) are just these inherently predatory beasts who try their best to not be monsters, but sometimes they just slip up and do a bunch of rape-murder-cannibalism, and really, who wouldn't?(everyone else)

And then you really see that with how Whedon apparently hated Spike, didn't want him around, tried to make him as pathetic as possible, but ultimately Spike *doesn't* want to do any of the stuff Angel does, and I think the other writers intentionally drove that home

Honestly, the perception that the White Dudes Being Evil thing started with Breaking Bad completely ignores Angel, who got his own show and was absolutely as bad as Walter White, but with more, you know, rape and murder of infants

As a grimdark disciple, I don't object to the evilness of Angel and I really enjoyed his show I just can't help but think we have way more direct evidence that his behavior was meant to excuse real toxic behavior by creators now than we do for Breaking Bad, Mad Men, etc.

Say what you will about GRRM, and I've heard bad things, I don't think he wrote ASOI&F bc he felt it would help him deal with his perfectly natural manly urge to screw his sister and throw a kid out of a tower

Some creators admit when the thematics of their characters reflect things they don't admire in themselves, but I don't think Neil Druckmann is in any danger of being found interfering with clinical trials of the COVID vaccine on people under 18

        Replying to @BootlegGirl

I don't like Angel on Buffy & only sort of enjoy him on Angel, but I think this thread is unfair. You're conflating Angel & Angelus when the difference between them was a key part of the story. And as annoying as Angel was, Edward is still far more horrifying.
