I think Crouching Tiger was probably the first tragic story I ever saw with a female antiheroine. The movie was quite important to me in that sense, and possibly even causal (I'm not entirely sure why I became fixated on tragic antiheroines from very early on, but I did)

I was into Shakespeare, but only what my dad suggested, and he never suggested King Lear (he hates it specifically for some reason) so prior to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon I think I thought only dudes could be flawed and tragic

What does it signify to realize you're slightly resentful at your father for, among other things, never buying you a copy of King Lear

It still shocks me that there are people who haven't seen Crouching Tiger, it was a BIG deal in 2000 But then I remember I'm old and didn't see big movies from 1990

I wouldn't go so far as a blanket statement like "CTHD is a feminist Kung Fu film", but I was deeply struck by the moral theme - here were five deeply unhappy characters, and they were all unhappy because what they chose "what society expected of them" over what they wanted.

Well, Jen didn’t do that, and she still is clearly quite unhappy

I remember walking out of CTHD and just being stunned at what I had seen. I'm sure it can be read more deeply, but for me it was how I wanted Jedi to be portrayed. Mystical swordsman with an honor code.
