Like, I'm sure Black people make up a huge part of these shows' audiences, but white people are still a huge proportion, and both Watchmen and Lovecraft Country don't just have Black protagonists, they mainly represent white people as antagonists. And we (white people) watch them

So maybe there’s something similar about LGBT issues? Like what I'm usually asking for isn't even on the same level, I don't need "what if the actual history of the Stonewall riots was represented, but also with UFOs”, just some queer people and UFOs or whatever

Maybe these shows are succeeding *because* they confront the issues (quite unsubtly) head on though?

and like, I dunno. I'm certainly not less able, as a white person, to identify with the protagonists of these shows? (this is not me claiming I'm a Good White Person who hasn't internalized any racism, I'm not at all saying that)

but like, for me, I don't need protagonists to be like me in terms of race. I honestly don't know (since I can't put myself in the perspective) whether the dynamics are similar for majority audiences in terms of sexuality and gender identity.

I'm weakly convinced that a lot of sexism/racism/homophobia in representation is just circular reasoning - nobody does these things because they think they won't succeed, so they don't support the few they try, so they don't succeed. People will watch good stories with anyone
