Like I actually do think it would be more Interestimg if they had had a conversation at any point than that ghastly final scuffle. Truly. But I am willing to buy the idea that it required a different setting for them to do so.

It's a tragic narrative, is what I mean. Classically tragic (they signal that with the theater having performed a Greek tragedy, etc.) Ellie can't give up on her revenge and Abby can't say she's sorry bc that's not who they are

This is what coffeeshop AUs were invented for. Not the facepunch AU, though- while Ellie and Allie could theoretically talk there, I think it would detract from the facepunching.
