I keep a Christmas card list in Excel which is sort of the same thing I suppose
-
That was my first thought! I've definitely got a spreadsheet of Christmas card addresses

I have a lot of cousins that I'd only see once a year, and I struggle with names/faces. So when I was a kid, I put together a DoS database listing all my cousin's with memorable physical features. I'd print it off and study it before going to see them. Just seems sensible...

At the risk of defending Wohl, who is a walking obscenity, this strikes me as a bit like a modern version of a little black book, Rolodex, private journal, etc. It's just electronic. If you know a lot of people and want to remember what to say when you correspond, it's prudent.
-
Yeah, I see no issue with it (and you know the person I referred to who does this; I never found it troubling, and understood why he did this)

lol Wohl is awful but THIS is nonsense. I don't personally keep a list of my friends and acquaintances in Excel, but honestly I probably SHOULD. How helpful it would be to have needed info immediately to hand. Also in general I keep lists of so many things in Excel!

it's gotta be, specifically, the rise of social media that makes this seem like such a weird concept. "Why would you list all your friends in a spreadsheet when you could just look on facebook? Why would anyone keep a big yellow book in their house with everyone's phone# in it?"

Although it is kind of weird to analyze their demographics to prove you're not a bigot.
