The old house in bought has a huge stone pantry in the basement that I would like to fill up. It was built in the 20s and I guess they used it to store ice/meat in.

Depending on where you live, consider a deep freezer and buy a whole pig from a butcher.

Seriously, one good home investment is backup power source. Never can tell when emergency will happen. If it's a new home, that should always be at top of investment list.
