I want to scream this to the heavens. Im on Upwork as a community manager and moderate and I get SO MANY PEOPLE asking me if I can market their game for them or what not. I usually decline saying it's not in my skill set.

As someone who spent years in school becoming a commercial photographer to be asked over and over if I specialized in video, I feel this.

I feel as if this is a dumb question, but I always thought it was reverse, that being a SMM tried to expand the community and the CM tried to maintain the community that has been established. I took a marketing class (HS) but we didn’t go in depth on social media.

Marketers try to market, whether that means more awareness or converting to sales, or getting wishlists. Community managers manage the members of your community and attempt to strengthen that community. It's a widely variable field for both though!

Totally agreed. They should be separate positions, but even at larger studios they are often mixed to some degree. I currently doing a mixture of social media, community, and product marketing. I'd argue they are all based out of marketing though.

Collaboration of the two can be to an advatanged. But I agree & it pisses me or as someone who has spent years to study social media when ever I get called a gloryfied CM. CMs does amazing work & SM likewise don't put one higher then the other.

According to all these job postings I see, companies sure do want them to be! “Why pay two people when we can pay one person to do both jobs for half the price!?”
-
alas, most 'community' gigs are like, a dozen jobs rolled into one.
