Letting that comparison turn to envy, jealousy, resentment. Letting other's perceived success be a reason you bring yourself down.

Taking someone else's success as a personal attack on you. That's where it turns toxic. The act of comparison is a natural occurrence.

This is why self help is so big. It's still comparison. You're comparing yourself to the words you're reading/hearing.

But the thing about self help, there's just no face to tie that resentment to. You're forced to tie it to yourself, accountability.
