I think a LOT about black women, our hair, our nails, our fashion, etc and how it relates to our agency and culture.pic.twitter.com/lxWRbCq2xk

Just comments/compliments I get everyday on my aesthetic. People love to project their norms onto black women any time we change our aesthetic.
When white people see me with my long nails “how do you type with those things”, the same way you are projecting Marybeth, I just DO it.
Or if we change our hair “I like your hair better ______”. I didn’t fucking ask you what you preferred. There have been times I’ve had to tell people verbatim “I DO NOT START MY DAY THINKING ABOUT WHAT _____ WANTS ME TO LOOK LIKE.”
So much of the changes people outside of black culture see and don’t understand it is BLACK WOMEN ASSERTING AGENCY OVER OURSELVES AND OUR BODIES.
I can’t change much in the world, but I can change my hair with NO ONES PERMISSION. Same goes for nails and why nail art is SO IMPORTANT TO BLACK WOMEN’S CULTURE.
Secondly, in a way if a black woman does not assimilate (straight hair/long hair/short nails) IT IS A PROTEST. Our bodies are walking, talking protests. That “No, you DONT own me! I can’t wear my hair/nails/clothes any way I please!”
It’s also SELF CARE. Black women making themselves look good for themselves. No one else. So don’t stop doing your hair the way you want. Your nails. Etc. Fuck anybody projecting onto you, black woman.
