Whooooo remembers that article on when people were going through things, the writer would always bring up their own pain as a way of relating to them? Please find me that article.
Nope. It was really good and displayed how we as human use our own experiences with things in order to relate to others and help them cope but the intention ends up badly executed because we’ve centered ourselves in that moment.

I try to avoid this but sometimes i truly can’t relate without relating it to something I’ve been through.
-
The issue with that is its not empathy. Empathy is not centering yourself, it’s centering the other person’s pain and understanding it. You don’t need to relate it to your similar pain in order to empathize.

i think relatating to someone or noting a similar experience isn’t necessarily always centering though. it really varies on wording, situation, etc. but it definitely can toe the line and that’s where we have to be careful.
