    I both love and hate that part of my job entails spending 2 hours on a Sunday evening reading multiple math analysis textbooks to make sure I was translating the word 'Bildungsgesetz' correctly in the context of the engineering textbook I'm editing.

    This is such a shame--the focus of universities on what's profitable and popular (and this is a huge problem in my own country as well) is deeply disheartening. If I had the resources to donate to keep the study of these languages alive I'd do it in a heartbeat.

    We have had to abolish all our cuneiform-related courses, with the exception of first year Akkadian. Our 3 programmes in cuneiform studies have been withdrawn, but will be "taught out", so there will be some Akkadian and Sumerian this year and the next ...

    All of this, exactly. I had to step away from FB this morning bc of all the "omg qweeeen" posts. RBG is not someone to worship. She's human, with a flawed record like anyone else. It's telling that most of her biggest fans that I know are middle-class white women.

    Was just thinking the other day how unlikely it'd be for RDB to be made today, at least without significant blowback, cuts, etc. What a great film.

    As the very idea of dissent is criminalised, had a long chat with Rakeysh Mehra abt how the idea of Rang De Basanti germinated, the drama to get it cleared from Delhi, and whether he thinks he can make a film as anti-establishment as RDB in today’s India

    What's the word for this kind of cringe crap? (Also reminder that RGB had 117 law clerks but only found room for one black clerk among them, and called Colin Kaepernick's protest for racial justice "dumb and disrespectful", so the 'Ruthkanda' thing is just particularly cringe.)

    Or perhaps propping up Hillary Clinton, a figure despised by both the right and much of the left and whose presence on the ticket inspired no one but middle-of-the-road white liberals, was the single worst decision the Democrats ever made.
