Fossils are bones, and we have preserved remains of living creatures going back millions of years. However, a 'civilisation' would produce artefacts. You would not want to rely on a chemical signature alone.

I seam to remember a scientist saying that dinosaurs didn't have a space programme, and I asked for why this is the case? Maybe civilizations before us did a better job of conserving their world than we are with ours
