I always tipped housekeeping when checking out, then learned an important angle: Tip every day you stay. The crew who cleans the room when you check out may not be the same as during your stay. Shifts change. Days off change.

Leaving tips is good, but it would be much better if hotels paid them a decent wage in the first place. Oh, and guests not behaving like selfish dirty bastards would make their job a lot less painful.

Absolutely. I just wish tipping would be an occasional reward for exceptional service, not a constant necessity.
