I am more inclined to say that Kirk was much more three-dimensional than the way he is now remembered. The hyper-masculine elements would show up from time to time, but didn't dominate Shatner's performance like some now suggest.

"The heterosexism goggles, which derange content via chauvinist interpretive paradigms, become not just inaccurate but horrifying" Suspicions confirmed: it's bullshit.

I've been watching Star Trek since it originally aired when I was a kid in the sixties. I perceive Kirk as both a product of sixties TV entertainment and also as a champion for morality and justice. Roddenberry created him as an ideal from a future that we strive towards.

Much like reading so much fanfic that you lose track of what happened in canon, I think after enough exposure to straight-up Shatner you lose track of canon Kirk.

Of course hyperbole is going to stretch the portrayal...he was quite simply an excellent leader. His reaction to Stile's racism in The Balance of Terror, his realization that killing wasn't the answer in Arena, his defence of the Horta in The Devil in the Dark, etc

huh? maybe because I am a Trekkie ... I remember Kirk as being Kirk. and it was the 60s, so he was uhm, pretty awesome for the time

The Kirk in my mind is not TOS Kirk, that is true. The Kirk in my head is Wrath of Khan Kirk. Caution, guile, angst about aging, and showing his grief.

Rewatching it now, all the characters on that show are pretty inconsistently written from episode to episode. Whatever show bible they gave writers/directors must not have been very specific.

I'm not sure '60s TV shows even really had those as we would understand the term today. Certainly they were customarily much less concerned with the details than genre shows today.

Hell, it could be argued that modern shows pay closer attention to such matters in large part BECAUSE original Star Trek developed such a persnickety fandom, and made that kind of audience scrutiny something producers watch out for.
