whomever listed Maine as being 'Urban housing' is smoking some seriously illegal substances. It's largely rural. The potatoes outnumber the people 10 to 1. Lots of forested, undeveloped areas.

It's just an illustration of how big that area type is relative to the whole country. I doubt Florida is owned by 10 people yet.

Is this land use for the 50 states projected onto a map of the lower 48? Hawaii is tiny, but Alaska is quite a big chunk to be missing.

Ah, I read the Bloomberg article and found that this excludes Alaska and Hawaiipic.twitter.com/GlvtFAkArI

It is truly unfortunate that the graphic creator of this US map decided to fill in the State of Maine, the state with the most trees in it - covering 95% of Maine’s land surface - as the place to label “urban housing.”

The zoomed out map on the post is nonsense. Minnesota and Wisconsin are not fallow. But the zoomed in map in the article is quite cool.

This does not reflect the fundamental nature of land. Livestock pasture cannot support trees for Maple syrup. It implies that land is interchangeable and we have choices ... still interesting. The topic of choices is important 4 climate change reality checks.

In liberal fairy tale land, it’s simultaneously problematic to sprawl outside of dense cities and use land outside of dense cities for anything useful

Um, yeah, not so much. Try living in the western part of the country, and you find that most of that "range" is nothing but desert.

The problem with this depiction is that it doesn't show *impact. Golf appears as a relatively small land use, but it tends to cluster in areas of highest population density, where it affects the most people and the availability of land for public use.

I’d like to see a map like this from a wild animal’s point of view instead of an exonomist’s

Unfortunate timing, but that "golf" square around North Myrtle Beach made me lose my shit. Now I'm super interested in coastal Georgia Christmas trees
