The European Court of Human Rights is not in any way connected to the EU. It is part of the Council of Europe (a completely separate organisation) which has 47 members (only the Vatican, Belarus and Kazakhstan aren't members).

Oh, dear, no. The ECtHr interprets the European Convention on Human Rights, which is a Council of Europe instrument. The EU is legally obligated to accede (under the Lisbon Treaty), but that process is stalled right now. All EU member states are also CofE members, but EU & CofE

Aaaargh!! The ECHR is not the EU's top court. It's Europe's top court, covering many countries which are not in the EU as well as the EU. And what's with the gavel? Are you only interested in your US readers? Grrrrrrrrrrrrr! :0)
