Sooooo...this map is misleading in a couple ways. The cow pasture isn’t like wall-to-wall feedlots, it’s mostly BLM rangeland, often with very sparse density of livestock and a lot of wildlife.

Which I say, not because I think
@BoingBoing is likely to make that jump, but because this map, every time it shows up, has people pouring out of the woodwork demanding the end of beef. -
The bit that gets ME is that 100 largest landowner families. Dude.
-
Yeah, Or fucking golf. Compare that to state parks, or “defense” (a lot of which is really good managed wildlife. Ft. Hunter Ligget is 1: gorgeous, 2: largely untravelled, CP. SLO has HELLA strict protection regs).
-
The defense chunk is where most of our Red-Cockaded woodpeckers live around here!
-
Cp SLO is one of the last large areas for Calif. Kit Fox. See one of those, and your exercise is moved/cancelled. Fail to report seeing one, and your ass is court-martialed.

Fascinating indeed. Do note that this map is not showing which regions are given over to these purposes. (Maine isn’t full of urban housing, for example).
