HIV stigma and an absence of substantive and engaging sexual education is harming people living with HIV. A State Of HIV Stigma Study 2020 reports that 89% of Americans believe HIV stigma is still prevalent.
End HIV Stigma.
BI VISIBILITY DAY
We say no to biphobia, there is no need for Bi+ people to prove their sexual attraction or to defend their feelings for anyone. Today we are focusing on helping to build a supportive community that can help Bi+ people feel comfortable with their sexuality.
Following our Strategic Orientation meeting last weekend, our Board Members and Management team are confident and proud that BGF will address gaps in the HIV sector and continue to optimise how we serve our clients whilst advocating for people living with HIV. #ENDHIVSTIGMA
“My philosophy with clients is to always leave them with a smile on their face and that hasn’t changed. Brian, BGF Community Support Worker.

Queer youth should be safe everywhere.
“Gay and bisexual men have adjusted their prevention strategies throughout the HIV epidemic to protect themselves and each other. Our community has a long history of creating innovative strategies to reduce risk, and we are seeing this continue with this new health challenge."
"A recent success we had was with a homeless couple who were referred to us as they were having problems with medical adherence. The main issue was discrimination and mental health obstacles which prevented them from accessing a pharmacy."
Jessica, BGF Case Support Worker.
Today we recognise World Hepatitis Day, an initiative to raise awareness about hepatitis. This year’s theme is “Find the Missing Millions”, as 290 million people who live with hepatitis worldwide do not realise they have acquired it.
The City of Sydney has opened an Expression of Interest for artists who wish to contribute to an AIDS memorial that is being set up at Green Park, Darlinghurst.
This week (July 12th - July 18th) is DIABETES WEEK. An important week to raise awareness and help reduce the physical, mental and emotional impact that diabetes has on people’s lives. In 2020, almost 500 000 people with diabetes will experience mental or emotional health issues.
Today is International Non-Binary People’s Day which is an important day for visibility and raising awareness about gender expansiveness.
BGF stands in solidarity with the non-binary community and will continue to support and leverage their voices.

NATIONAL SORRY DAY
To strengthen the relationship with First Nations people and the wider Australian community it is vital that First Nations people are given the space and time to heal and that the truth of the Stolen Generation is acknowledged.
"A major clinical trial found that injections of long-acting cabotegravir given every eight weeks resulted in nearly 70% fewer new cases of HIV than daily Truvada pills taken as a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)."
"Volunteers are rightly revered in Australian culture. AIDS volunteers worked right at the very margins of life and death."
Thank you to our volunteers! Your support is the greatest gift!
GET TESTED. C-19 restrictions present a unique opportunity to screen for STIs and HIV and contribute to reducing transmissions within our community during lockdown.
"Despite significant progress made over recent years in fostering a more inclusive society in Australia including the legalisation of same-sex marriage, many LGBTQI+ Australians and families sadly continue to be targets of prejudice, discrimination and exclusion."
Health systems around the world are under immense pressure in response to COVID-19 and the impacts are exposing how people of colour and members of the LGBTQI+ community are disproportionately impacted by the current health crisis. @lgbtihealth
HIV rates in Australia hit 18-year low yet rates among heterosexuals or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations are climbing. HIV doesn't discriminate and the latest statistics stress the importance of HIV education among Australians.
THANK YOU NURSES! ❤️
... and although nurses are being compared to superheroes (and rightly so) we encourage you to remind friends and families that nurses are everyday people too and that post C19 we advocate that they receive the compensation they deserve.
Thank you to all the essential workers for putting your bodies on the line to help us all get through this unprecedented time.
Thank you to all the support workers who are out on the streets every day serving our clients and helping keep the pressure off the health care system.
Indigenous health and cultural knowledge must be considered when promoting access to HIV testing, PrEP, sex education, health care and employment opportunities in Aboriginal communities.
Aboriginal women need a seat at the table.

"People who experience higher levels of HIV-related stigma are less likely to remain in medical care for the virus."
The residual stigma of AIDS continues to threaten the well-being of PLHIV.
Stigma associated with AIDS continues to torment PLHIV despite medical advances that enable early diagnosed PLHIV to live healthy lives. The shift in terminology hopes to reflect the progress society has made and make way for a more accepting future.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration has approved a submission to reduce the waiting period for whole blood donors with a "sexual activity-based risk factor" from 12 - 3 months since their last sexual contact. Why not 12 - 0 months?
We do not condone this behaviour, but language is vital and groundlessly framing HIV as a threat fuels fear and stigma towards PLHIV. HIV cannot be transmitted through spitting and the risk from biting is negligible.
Physical Distancing saves lives.
We encourage our community to stay connected and reach out to members of the community. Through solidarity we'll beat #COVID19Aus
Given the need for social distancing to prevent transmission of #COVID19, LGBTI and HIV organisations are encouraging their communities not to have casual sex at this time. https://afao.org.au/our-work/coronavirus-covid-19/…
