It's because programmers dont have to scrape for kilobytes of memory like they did in 80s, noe that we have tons of storage theres really no point to compression unless its absolutely needed

It is likely duplicate files. ESO was a little more than that until a month ago when they dropped their duplicate files. I think having a large amount of memory is a strategy that is used to stop you from uninstalling for any amount of time, keep you on microtransactions
