I install networks on a massive scale in an industrial/commercial scale. To be honest it matter very little which protocol Nintendo uses. The true deciding factor is how many “jumps” the signal must make to the servers 1/?

When a networked device connects to the internet. It will travel to a consolidation point, a hub. Most of these hubs are located in major metropolitan cities. The signal is bounced around until it reaches the servers. Which are probably in Japan.
