As just someone that has a lot of electronics and servers constantly running, I have found having a UPS to be worth it. I’ve found a lot of places getting rid of them because they don’t want to replace the batteries.

It's worth replacing the battery though. The problem is to know when. But we do it anyway.

Power stations can overheat causing blackouts. It's happened in my hometown.

So am I understanding this correctly: a UPS is kind of like a power strip, but it has an internal battery to keep it running temporarily if the power goes out? That sounds really cool.

Yes and size depends on what you need it for. My office uses two of the big ass blocky APC units to keep a couple servers running for about 6-8 hours with no power. You can certainly get a smaller one for a home office though.
