And then from this base, no doubt I'm going to find that I have many inactive connections, which I will at some point in the future do a mass cull on, and rebuild and refine again and again. And incrementally find better and better connections.

Who is my inspiration?
@JustinTrudeau, who set the most amazing example for the world when elected as Canadian Prime Minister in 2015 and selected a gender-balanced cabinet, along with other diversity: "A cabinet which looks like Canada":https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8OOIU7xQrk …2 replies 0 retweets 2 likesShow this thread -
And also
@shanselman, who has inspired me in so many ways. I worked at@EA for over 15 years, where I was never allowed to participate in open source projects or to run my own side-business.1 reply 1 retweet 2 likesShow this thread -
Meeting
@shanselman and@migueldeicaza and the rest of the@xamarinhq crew in Austin in 2013 for Xamarin Evolve 2013 changed my life course. They showed me first hand how to live your life as a software engineer outside of corporate culture. Heart on your sleeve. Social coding.2 replies 2 retweets 16 likesShow this thread -
Scott and
@robconery's http://getinvolved.hanselman.com/ was amazing to me. I never had that. For my entire career I had been trapped inside corporate walls reading about such communities but never being part of them.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likesShow this thread -
Scott in particular is so much more than "a techie". He cares deeply about diversity, and representation, and fighting racism and sexism within technology. If I could ever have a fraction of the social impact which Scott has had at
@Microsoft and then@oscon I would be thrilled.1 reply 1 retweet 4 likesShow this thread -
The fact that somebody who keynotes
@Microsoft's major conferences, who has been at the core of@aspnet and right in the thick of the 180 degree culture change which took@Microsoft from the depths of "Linux is a Cancer" to joining the@linuxfoundation as a Premier Member ...1 reply 1 retweet 1 likeShow this thread -
The fact that an individual who is a key part of that transformation (also huge kudos to
@satyanadella,@scottgu and probably many more I am unaware of) could do so in such an open way with his heart on his sleeve, opening engaging with the world, getting out there with everyone.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likesShow this thread -
That insight and example has transformed my life and my entire approach to my professional life. I started getting out of my comfort zone and pushing my boundaries and getting involved outside of my day job, to the degree that was possible.

I started tweeting, almost immediately nearly blowing up my whole career as I stepped out of my comfort zone and immediately mis-stepped: EA Senior Engineer: 'The Wii U Is Crap' - IGN http://ca.ign.com/articles/2013/05/17/ea-senior-engineer-the-wii-u-is-crap … So that wasn't so happy (suspended for a week and in disgrace).

But I survived, found a place on one of the first mobile teams within @EASPORTS - working on @EASPORTSUFC for iOS and Android - and investing @monoproject and @unity3d possibilities for EA. None of that came to fruition, so I left:https://bobsummerwill.com/2014/05/15/end-of-an-era/ …

Inspired by
@shanselman to start a new career, actively blogging, contributing to open source projects, taking part in local user groups and Meetups. And going to@oscon, where Scott is now a program chair.1 reply 0 retweets 1 likeShow this thread -
But more specifically, Scott inspired me to open my eyes by giving women in technology a platform, and giving ethnic minorities a platform, and people at the very beginning of their career a voice. Scott demonstrates his love for humanity every day. I want to be like Scott.
