More A "stolon" is a modified stem, with nodes and internodes, and can initiate new growth from those nodes. A common plant that produces stolons is the strawberry and the stolons are called "runners".

A magnificent Euphorbia esculenta in habitat in South Africa. A medusa type euphorbia with a large caudex. I don't have Euphorbia esculenta in my collection but photos like this makes me want to get one. 😀 Photo by Jiří Merhaut via

The state tree of Minnesota is the Red Pine, Pinus resinosa. It was selected by the state legislature in 1953. It is a large needled evergreen, growing 50 to 80 ft (15-25 m) in height. Although sometimes called the Norway pine, it is native to North America.

My largest Titanopsis calcarea flowering a few weeks ago. Titanopsis calcarea, (known in South Africa as "little tortoise feet", flowers mainly in winter and early spring for me. It seems to like the lower, night winter temperatures it experiences in my over-wintering frames.

Echinocactus horizonthalonius (eagle claw ) growing in Big Bend National Park, southwestern Texas. Hard to determine if this is a two-stemmed single plant, or two separate plants whose seedlings germinated close together. Nice plant either way. 🙂

"Genotype" is the actual genetic makeup of a plant, which may or may not be visibly expressed. "Phenotype" is the physical appearance (expression) of a plant based on the genotype. (Yes, I'm reviewing heredity and genetics for my upcoming botany talk.)

There are some succulents that might be called "Mediterranean" plants because they grow best in the Mediterranean type climate of mild winters and not so hot summers. The Aeoniums are such plants. Shown is Aeonium arboreum 'Zwartkop'

The succulent genus Echeveria was first described by Swiss botanist A. P. de Candolle (1778-1841) in 1828 and is named after the 18th-century Mexican painter and botanical artist Anastasio Echeverria. Shown is the Echeveria hybrid 'Alfred'.

This is why every fossil collecting guide (and local laws) tells you not to collect on the cliffs of the Calvert Cliffs. The waterline is easier and safer.

I have a Basic Botany talk coming up next week. I am reviewing fruits today. A common type of fruit is a berry, a fleshy fruit produced from a single flower containing one ovary. These are berries from the American pokeweed or poke salad plant (Phytolacca americana).

My first experience with artificial light gardening was long ago just after graduating from high school. This was the simple set up of a fluorescent light unit to grow a few foliage plants. It made me realize you indeed could grow plants without sunlight. A eureka moment. 😀

Rebutia muscula was one of the earliest I had in my collection; presently I have no rebutias. 🙁 Reoccurring problems with spider mites soured me on the genus some years ago. R. muscula, is now considered a form of Rebutia fiebrigii. Beautiful soft white spines.

Succulents covered with paint or glitter might be fun for awhile, but don’t count on them to live very long. These substances interfere with the plants’ ability to receive light for photosynthesis and the plants won’t have the energy they need to survive…

Chinese money plant (Pilea peperomioides) is a popular small houseplant that is easy to propagate. When new shoots grow from the main stem or roots and are about 2-3” tall, you can separate them from the parent plant and put them directly into fresh pott…

One of my favorite opuntias is Opuntia basilaris, the beavertail cactus. The pads (stems) are spineless and attractive, and the flowers are nice also. Unfortunately, it is not reliably winter hardy here in Maryland, so there will not be one in my outdoor hardy planting. 🙁

While I primarily grow cacti and other succulents now, it wasn't always the case. Years ago, my passion was African violets, and I had an entire room dedicated to them and grew them exclusively under fluorescent lighting. They really are great plants, and they have no spines!

My outdoor winter hardy C&S beds are primarily for plants that can stay outdoor all year, but sometimes I would add a few non winter hardy plants. One such summer only plant was this large Aloe ferox. People were always surprised to see it planted outside here in Maryland.

The State Bird of Pennsylvania is the Ruffed Grouse. Actually it was officially adopted by the legislature as the state game bird in 1931. The ruffed grouse was an important part of the food supply for early settlers of the state.
