1,000,000% this. If a senior engineer can’t explain it to you in a way you understand - even if you are a lot less experienced - that’s THEIR deficiency. Not yours. When this happens, it means THEY actually don’t understand it well enough.https://twitter.com/noahsussman/status/1170870234066165760 …

Ehhhhhhhh.....should a senior be able to mentor juniors? Yeah. Like that's your job. I twitched because I'm very good at what I do but have a horrible time explaining things to nontechnical business people. They always want me to teach them CS in 5 minutes or less.

See that's where I raised my eyebrow. I think the assumption here is this is eng to eng communication. But in my role as a senior, I frequently have to interface with C level folks that think I'm a magical wizard that performs voodoo. Very hard to talk to these people.

still, *you're* the one with the knowledge, not them. think of how much easier your job would be if you were able to meet them on their level? in my experience, it mostly involves putting in effort to understand where they're at and use terms, analogies, etc., to help understand.

Or they could respect me for the highly trained experienced professional that I am instead of what normally has happened over the past 20 years. C-suite people running on incorrect assumptions, being resistant to learning, and thinking they can do my job.

i think we're talking about two different things.

Which is exactly what I noted above. The OP is talking about eng to eng communication but, as a senior, you're going to be interfacing with non-engineers, and I reject the notion that someone is a bad engineer because they can't explain things to people with no shared vocabulary.
