1,000,000% this. If a senior engineer can’t explain it to you in a way you understand - even if you are a lot less experienced - that’s THEIR deficiency. Not yours. When this happens, it means THEY actually don’t understand it well enough.https://twitter.com/noahsussman/status/1170870234066165760 …

Disagree. Some very brilliant people might be very strong in what they do although they also have poorer communication skills and have trouble explaining what they know. Also check out reduxX for

Being good at something doesn't imply you are a good explainer of that thing.

You cannot be a senior developer without being able to explain what you know. Full stop. No exceptions. Some might have the title without that ability, but they don’t deserve it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

A senior engineer is a multiplier. They make everyone around them better. Now it doesn’t have to be in person - they could write it up, or make a great test suite that explains it. But somehow, they have to communicate to other people what they know.

"A senior engineer is a multiplier. They make everyone around them better." Really? --- Anyways, you can say whatever you want it doesn't mean reality works that way.

Heh. I know not everyone’s caught up yet. In the new world, we’ve given up the jolt cola and pizza and basements and all the rest of the old solitary developer trappings. Join us! The old world is diminishing quickly. :)

I just spent 20 years operating in places where 9/10, I'm the only engineer. Where are these places where I'm not working 80 hours a week and powered by caffeine (or other substances)?
