In 1993 there were over 2,400 murders in NYC, last year there were 289. It’s impossible to explain to a 30 year old what that 1993 New York was like. It was at times legitimately frightening.https://twitter.com/BlueBoxDave/status/1133417679648432130 …

The thing on the 1994 crime bill is that if you’re over 40 you may think it was draconian, but you can remember what a crisis crime actually was back then . If you’re under 40 it just seems like It was needless overkill.

Sadly, you could explain it proportionately by comparing 1993 NYC to present-day Baltimore.

The declining trend in violent crime began several years before the 1994 crime bill. Same is true for Broken Windows policing in NYC. You can’t validly claim that either the fed law or local policy caused the decline.

There is very little good comprehensive argument for the precipitous decline in violent crime in the early 1990s Barry Latzer's book attempts one; i think its probably better than most of what has come before but isn't the last word on the subject https://www.amazon.com/Rise-Fall-Violent-Crime-America/dp/159403835X …

Exactly. Not unlike trying to explain what "Freedom of Speech" once meant.

Understanding that it was a TV show, but the first few seasons of the original Law & Order captured it pretty well.

And it has some of the strongest gun laws and one of the highest percentages of non-native-born residents among major US cities - imagine that!

Trump’s anti-crime ad was also placed near the peak of violent crime. Read it if you haven’t already.pic.twitter.com/Mgi9zAB1ud

So much of the criticism of the Crime Bill is just B.S. 2nd guessing. Even beyond the level of homicides in the country, the crack cocaine epidemic etc, was that these trends were going in the wrong direction for 25 straight years...the future looked terrifying

No, nationwide crime rates were declining for several years before 1994 and continued to decline on the same trajectory.

Dozens of NYC cabbies were murdered in 1993. Just let that fact sink in.
