Parents of disabled children, please do not turn up in the mentions of disabled people & disabled people's community spaces telling us how to describe ourselves. You do you, but it's my disability, it's my identity, I'll use the words I want & have agreed with my community.

Also, whilst I'm spilling the tea. It may be worth remembering that many of us were disabled children who had decades of people telling us how to describe ourselves & using euphemisms that we are very glad to be free of. So maybe it might be helpful to listen to our experiences

Disabled children & young people need disabled adult mentors who can support them to understand their disability in a positive empowering space. Twitter is a great way to find us & there are lots of resources BY disabled people for you to use as a parent #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs

And my final hot take, which may not go down well. Your disabled child is going to grow up & read all those blog posts you wrote about them. Reflect.

Informed consent! They insist their child chose "differently abled." But is the child surrounded by a community of thriving disabled adults? They likely don't actually have enough context to give informed consent to use a nonstandard term that a nondisabled adult slipped them.

I hope it was ok that I replied - I tried to be polite! Internally I was raging. Clearly a parent who is uncomfortable with their child’s disability...

Yup, like I said you do you, but policing from a non disabled person about how we describe ourselves isn't ok. The policing was repeated despite our calm direct explanation. Not acceptable. Everyone is on a journey & identifies their own way, but don't tell others how to do it.

Also, their children do not have special needs. They are not differently abled or handicapable. They are disabled. Also, unless the parent has a disability, they are not “special-needs parents,” (a term I’ve seen thrown around a lot.)

Anyone using handicapable needs to be thrown in the sea. It's an abomination
