    I have encouraged two Black women who were not feeling into their power, was fed spiritually and emotionally by a beloved sister friend, used an embodiment practice a Black woman taught me to still my mind and ground myself all before noon on a Tuesday.

    I think this static analysis of Black in particular is a major reason why investment, exposure, respect and overall appreciation of what we contribute to advancing access and liberation doesn’t get the traction it deserves.

    The Black folk outside of Detroit and Chicago are largely written off of less radical, less connected to stories of land and spirit, and more assimilationist due to our relationship to white folx in this region.

    It’s also fascinating how powerful Harriet Tubman’s Underground Railroad is/was before the abolition of slavery. And how Black family’s like mine who left the south for the Midwest during the Great Migration are/were seen as weaker, less righteous b/c we didn’t stay.

    The sacredness of Black spiritual traditions and ceremonies have always been coded in the Bible for our protection. Hoodoo, a tradition of practicing faith and endurance was born out of enslavement. It combines relationship with the land, spirit and rootwork with the Bible.

    No matter what I’m holding, or navigating it will not be too heavy or too much of a distraction because I don’t stop breathing when I’m stressed. I may not be breathing deep, but I’m still doing what I can to maintain life in my body.
