American Horror Story is one of those shows that, somehow intrinsically, always seems to follow the same pattern for me: the first half of each season is riveting and ensnaring, and then I fall asleep halfway through the other half and give up on it. Am I missing something?

That's fine! At least we can both likely agree that all the seasons have their own merits, and they're maybe just falling short for us in ways only we care about.
