    And never mind that direct methane releases from melting permafrost could be starting a runaway process of rapid global warming for which no solution seems feasible. Putin apparently thinks only to the end of his own Presidency. See my cli-fi novel, THE PLOT TO COOL THE PLANET

    The irony of the decade: Russia now wants to slow climate change because melting permafrost threatens the infrastructure of its largest "natural gas" (methane) supply. Never mind that methane infrastructure leaks cause ~25% of current global warming.

    I just read a Post citing a "dystopian climate change" novel" about humans trying to survive in 2401. That's the optimistic view! Civilization and much of earth's human population will dying by 2100 unless we eliminate fossil fuel use by 2050 and reduce other GHG emissions, but

    I wrote this Op-Ed w/ 2 other VA air & water board members also fired by Gov. Northam. Dominion is manipulating the State to allow new infrastructure that makes ending fossil fuel use by 2050 more costly for ratepayers. Vote against Dominion this fall!

    Scientists are finally sending a new message designed to arouse people to action. "Climate change" won't just harm our grandchildren, it's here now. Conditions will get increasingly worse, and won't reverse for decades EVEN IF fossil fuel use ends by 2050

    Here's an insightful analysis of Dominion Energy's new facilities plans: its own official filing with Virginia. What it doesn't say is that if Dominion is forced to close these new plants to end CO2 emissions, ratepayers must still pay them, and it wins.

    Geoengineering to dim the sun and/or some unknown future technology to remove carbon from the atmosphere is the only hope of actually moving the climate back toward what human life (and all other life) depends upon as normal within the coming decades, not the next century.

    Geoengineering to dim the sun and/or some unknown future technology to remove carbon from the atmosphere is the only hope of actually moving the climate back toward what human life (and all other life) depends upon as normal.

    The icecaps and glaciers aren't coming back; the ocean won't become less acidic, the extinctions, storms, sea level rise, desertification, permafrost melting, will still get worse with every passing year (on average) until the CO2 slowly disappears from the atmosphere.

    If we could ban fossil fuel today, the climate would still be getting worse for generations - perhaps fatally for civilization as we know it. As one scientist put it, "Things will get worse and worse until we stop making them worse, then they will never get better."

    All of the electrification and renewable energy (which I strongly favor) won't solve the problem of the impact of the EXISTING CO2 in the atmosphere, which will continue to progressively raise the earth's temperature for another 150 years.

    I keep reading attacks on geoengineering as a dangerous and unnecessary path forward when we should instead be concentrating on ending the use of fossil fuel and industrial-scale agriculture. This argument misunderstands the timescale involved in climate change.
