Cause there is many people you struggled with their identity for a long time. Having to deal with internal hate, society (and often family) ostracism. Misgendering someone is instant reminder of those feelings and simply rude.

If you ever unsure simply ask. Also if someone corrects you simply start using the right ones.

There are 2 aspects of "they":
