The advice in this thread is probably right for most academic search communities (in the humanities, perhaps elsewhere).
The question I have is whether it should be right.
Unfortunately explaining what I mean will require more than one tweet. I am sorry.
Some people think the cover letter is not important. It is. Very important. Introduce yourself in the first paragraph, but don’t tell your CV. In the following paragraph make the committee say “tell me more” by explaining concisely:
When my novel came out, my coworkers made a library catalog card for it, signed it and had it framed, and to this day it’s one of the most special and thoughtful gifts I’ve ever received and sits on my desk by my computer
“money doesn’t buy happiness” but money does buy a bookshelf ladder and a green velvet couch and a wide bay window with a windowsill for you to curl up in
We say we don't have a dress code in tech and we pretend to have an inclusive culture but in fact we do and this dress code and culture disproportionately affects women.
Today we celebrate our friend Jim Henson, who was born September 24, 1936. Sing along with Rowlf and join all of us Muppets as we wish Jim a very happy birthday!
the irony that when mary oliver asked “what are you going to do with your one wild and precious life” she was simply going to pay attention to the world! simply kneel in the grass and watch a grasshopper! and now it’s used in the context of productivity as ~a motivational quote~
This is bad advice. It assumes first drafts are nothing more than dumping grounds. Not all writers develop their ideas the same way. Draft value varies by project and writer.
I read a "how to" book that said, for the first draft, you keep the 10% that is working and discard the other 90%. Yes, that’s NINETY PERCENT. Nine zero. Wow. I hone & edit. No way do I discard 90%. Am I doing this wrong?! #writers How much do you keep of your first draft?
NEW: We can confirm 50 migrants were flown to Martha's Vineyard and are being helped at a church.
The men, women & kids said they didn't know where they were.
And Florida Gov Ron DeSantis told Fox he sent them as part of his "relocation program for illegal immigrants." (more)
I was inspired to paint these Raven stones after a group of Ravens visited our garden last week. I’m in the process of uploading them to my online shop now.
Well, didn't make rent. So close! Lacking $400 to make rent and $95 for late fee. I have the following paintings for sale still and you can also help through my ko-fi at
"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a person in possession of a good library, must be in want of more books."
The dragon looked smug, as if they had said something clever.
"True," said the knight, hefting his lance. "But those belong to the town library. Return them!"
Brain fog – which encompasses memory problems, lack of mental clarity and an inability to focus – had eluded scientific scrutiny until covid-19 thrust it into the spotlight

JFC no. No no no no. No game is worth anyone's health. Wtf is wrong with people. "Games are bad these days because devs aren't sacrificing their health to make them better" is quite possibly one of thr most toxic takes I've seen in a while.
Since this image is going viral again for some reason, I wanted to remind everyone that I am the artist! Here's a better quality version with my watermark on it.
It is tenure and promotion season and I want to remind my colleagues who have agreed to evaluate others that if you are not acknowledging--in writing-- the shitstorm that junior scholars have endured these past two years, you are not doing your review correctly. #AcademicTwitter

I have strong opinions about books and my own reading preferences and am really not shy about it!
Here is another strong opinion: readers should never expect, ask, suggest, or even hint that an author should change their writing style for us!
I've been writing single point of view for over eight years now. But getting more push back recently to return to dual. Not sure if I should give it a go again or not.

I am pitching a panel on Appalachian fantasy and horror to the World Fantasy Convention and would really, really like to hear from BIPOC and/or LGBTQ+ folks with ties to the region or deep knowledge of its speculative literature tradition who are attending the con. Please share.
We celebrate the life of Nichelle Nichols, Star Trek actor, trailblazer, and role model, who symbolized to so many what was possible. She partnered with us to recruit some of the first women and minority astronauts, and inspired generations to reach for the stars.
Many actors become stars, but few stars can move a nation. Nichelle Nichols showed us the extraordinary power of Black women and paved the way for a better future for all women in media. Thank you, Nichelle. We will miss you.
I shall have more to say about the trailblazing, incomparable Nichelle Nichols, who shared the bridge with us as Lt. Uhura of the USS Enterprise, and who passed today at age 89. For today, my heart is heavy, my eyes shining like the stars you now rest among, my dearest friend.
There simply aren’t enough words to express her impact, her importance, how beloved she was, her power, her presence and the feeling of this loss, as a fan. Thank you for your light in the troubled world, Nichelle Nichols. ❤️🖖🏻#rip
