It's very simple: humanity does not understand proper long term investment & will shed blood to hold onto a belief that a finite resource is the permanent best choice instead of investing in the tech to make renewables stronger. Oil companies love this, they pay to encourage it.

Why would very wealthy fossil fuel suppliers do anything other than make sure renewables are the underdog, until there is no more fossil fuel to sell? Turkeys do not vote for Xmas. Renewables require deep long investment in a lot of ways. They hold the key to energy freedom.
