Notice, this analysis is for Denmark, where it is (reasonably) assumed that Danish plastic bags will be incinerated, so contributing energy at the end of their useful life while not blighting nature

This is a somewhat similar result as that of a 2011 UK government assessment, found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/291023/scho0711buan-e-e.pdf …

Modern western plastic bags have starch in their composition, so break down much quicker, especially when exposed to water and sunlight. But the bigger problem is properly dealing with waste rather than letting it wash out into the ocean.

Effect of various Li compounds on the environment is well understood as bad...as, for that matter, is the constant burning of petroleum. Luckily Li batteries are quite expensive (and disposal regulated) and so Li does not generally end up "free" in landfills. Hardly comparable.

Hi Bjorn. Hi from Dar, Tanzania where we swim with plastic bags. I'd like to see this analysis done here. Also we all know cotton can be terrible on environment. Just look at Aral sea. Why not compare with jute or better material? I'm a long way from being a believer here...

Very interesting! I always wondered about the numbers ... if people simply recycled their plastic bags and they did not seem to end up everywhere ...
