To be clear, the argument that has been made for a long time is the bit you highlighted in the text you attached to your tweet, not the conclusion you drew from it concerning the 2°C target.
Thanks for comments, and yes, the highlighted bit is something many in the community agrees to (even if it is not heard very loud) The article makes the other points (2°C focus means less focus/spending on adaptation)

It isn't heard by those wishing to portray adaptation as the effortless alternative to mitigation. But just like mitigation, adaptation faces many challenges and costs, which increase with failing mitigation efforts. Mitigation and adaptation don't compete, they go hand in hand.
